Tomato Whitefly
The tomato whitefly, commonly known as the “greenhouse whitefly,” is a major pest of vegetable crops, particularly in greenhouses. Despite its small size, this pest can cause significant and rapid damage to tomato plants, compromising both yields and crop quality.
The main species encountered are Trialeurodes vaporariorum (greenhouse whitefly) and Bemisia tabaci. These insects feed on plant sap by piercing the leaves, leading to a general weakening of the plant, yellowing foliage, slowed growth, and sometimes premature leaf drop.
What damage do whiteflies cause?
Visual damage
Tomato whitefly causes yellowing and wilting of leaves, a general weakening of plants, and, in cases of severe infestation, premature leaf drop, which can reduce yield and fruit quality.
Disease transmission
They can transmit viruses to crops, leading to slowed growth, weakened plants, and significant yield losses.
Honeydew & sooty mold development
The honeydew they secrete promotes sooty mold, a black deposit that blocks photosynthesis and makes salads unfit for sale.
The Advansee Solution
Our E-gleek connected traps offer real-time whitefly monitoring through automatic image capture and AI analysis. This continuous surveillance allows for very early detection of the pest’s arrival and observation of population evolution before damage becomes critical.
Our support
At Les 3 Moulins, we supported the teams throughout the entire implementation process: trap installation in the greenhouse, device configuration, platform training, and technical follow-up. This support enabled them to easily integrate the tool into their daily routine and obtain reliable data from the very first days.
Diagnosis
We analyzed the whitefly problem in the greenhouse and identified the most sensitive areas to monitor to best anticipate initial infestations.
Deployment
Installation of E-gleek devices in vertical mode with yellow sticky cards in the greenhouses, device configuration, and activation of automated capture monitoring, without daily manual intervention.
Optimization
Adjustment of positions, image calibration, and alert configuration to ensure reliable data and the earliest possible detection.
Initial results
The initial readings quickly allowed for the observation of the first aphid flights and helped producers intervene at the right time, before impacting tomato quality.
Our technological tools to combat whiteflies:

Trap
E-gleek
A connected trap that analyzes the number of trapped insects and issues alerts when an insect flight is detected or when the sticky card is saturated.
